What is Virginia Readers' Choice?
The Virginia Reader's Choice Awards is sponsored by THE VIRGINIA STATE READING ASSOCIATION in association with THE VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL LIBRARIANS, THE VIRGINIA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, & THE LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA YOUTH SERVICES.
Purpose
- Encourage young readers to become better acquainted with contemporary books with outstanding literary appeal
- Broaden students’ awareness of literature as a life-long pleasure
- Encourage reading aloud in classrooms as a means of introducing reading for pleasure
- Honor favorite books and their authors
EligiBility
- Books must be recognized as noteworthy in the field of children’s/young adult literature.
- Books must be published within three years prior to the ballot on which it appears.
- Books must be appropriate for the level for which it is nominated.
Voting Procedures
- Students must read at least four of the selected middle school books.
- Each student that has read at least four books can vote for their favorite.
- A responsible adult in a classroom or library setting must monitor the voting, and only one official tally will be sent in from each school.
- The winning book for each level is selected by popular vote of the participating students evaluating the books. Votes must meet the deadline date to be included in the popular vote.
- Voting is online in mid April. The link for voting will be posted on the Virginia State Reading Association's website.
